The references that have been used as the foundation for the Zuidkas concept are the concepts of the ‘Unité d’Habitation’ and of the ‘Zonneterp’. The ‘Unité d'Habitation’, realised by Le Corbusier in Marseille (1952), is a strong example of a functional mix at the building level, combining homes, a school, stores and a launderette. On the roof of the building, one finds a terrace with a swimming pool and a recreation area.

The concept of the urban greenhouse or ‘Zonneterp’ establishes connections between a greenhouse with a co-fermentation plant on the one hand and the built-up environment on the other. This concept involves four recycling streams: waste, water, heat, CO₂ and energy.
